Spectacle of Ritual’ by Kali Malone
Foreign Bodies by Matthew Herbert

In this piece, together with the dancers of NDCWales I am exploring the playground of the human body.
Wild thoughts is a riotous celebration of knees, arms, legs, glands, tongues, limbs and their untamed physical knowledge. What deeply touches me in this process is to see the urgent passion these performers have for movement and their generosity to share on stage the intimate and unique relationship they have with their bodies.” Andrea Costanzo Martini

Andrea Costanzo Martini

Andrea Costanzo Martini was born and raised in Italy where he received his first education in contemporary dance and ballet. He has danced in Aalto Theater Essen, Batsheva Young Ensemble, Batsheva Dance Company, Cullberg Ballet, Inbal Pinto and A. Pollack Dance Company. Since 2013 Andrea has been creating and performing his own works. He received the first prize for dance and choreography at the International Tanz Solo Competition Stuttgart in 2013 and was awarded several prizes for the solo works “What Happened in Torino” and “Occhio di Bue”. Andrea has focused on solo and duet works such as Trop, VoglioVoglia, SCARABEO (selected by Aerowaves 2018), but more recently started collaborating with companies such as Balletto di Roma and Balletto Teatro di Torino with the works Intro and Balera. Most recently Andrea’s research in dance focuses in both extreme physicality and theatricality in the performance act and explores the power balance between dancers and spectators. Always filled with humour and supported by a wide range of skills, Martini’s work questions and plays with the expectations of the dance medium. Trained in both ballet and contemporary technique, Andrea is also a Gaga instructor and has led dance workshops around the world since 2007. Andrea’s most recent works include ‘Mood Shifter’ and a piece for young audiences called ‘PayPer Play’.

Matthew Robinson

Matthew Robinson is a practising artist having worked as a dancer, choreographer, facilitator, Rehearsal Director and Artistic Director. Matthew became Artistic Director of NDCWales in September 2021. For many years Matthew danced for Scottish Dance Theatre, performing work by a diverse range of international choreographers including Sharon Eyal, Damien Jalet, Hofesh Shechter, and Victor Quijada. In 2013 he was invited to take on the responsibilities of Rehearsal Director, supporting the dancers and guest artists in their creative process, and the company on multiple international tours. Matthew was appointed Artistic Director of VERVE in 2016. Based at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, under his direction VERVE became known for its bold commissioning, collaborating with world-renowned and fresh choreographic voices to create distinct, engaging programmes of dance work. Reaching thousands of people each year, onstage, online and in outreach work, Matthew ambitiously led the company for five years. Matthew creates his own artistic work in independent, collaborative and commissioned contexts. As an artist he seeks to translate contradictions and complex feelings, through boldly physical and emotionally-layered choreographic construction. His latest work, September, is his second collaboration with music producer Torben Lars Sylvest. Matthew is a graduate of London Contemporary Dance School.

“Ludo invites audiences into a nostalgic universe where the characters only goal is play! We touch on manipulative adult mind and power games, we re-visit the more spontaneous, fantastical, imaginary play and we dive into the animalistic physicality of playground games and sports…I hope that in watching Ludo you're inspired to think about what role play had in your childhoods and perhaps how that’s changed as you’ve moved into adulthood. Have you found a way to hold onto 'play' as you've grown up?!” Caroline Finn
