“A stylized and surrealistic sixties sit com”

“My initial inspiration for The Green House came from the idea of pruning. For a while I’ve been conscious of how we can go through periods where we find ourselves ‘pruning’ our lives –either by actively cutting things away or simply accepting the natural migration of unnecessary weight.

Although this is sometimes a process which can leave us feeling lost, adrift and exposed, this careful pruning of our existence is surely what give us the potential to truly flourish and grow. I wanted to explore that process with the dancers – how/what we might prune, how it affects us, and what we can become as a result.

Contrary to Folk, my previous piece for the company, I was keen to establish quite a domestic setting for The Green House. I also wanted to find a way of reflecting the experience of feeling temporarily removed from one’s own life – more like an observer than an active participant.

Joe Fletcher and I gathered a lot of inspiration from other artists, writers and filmmakers, in particular Sandy Skoglund, Francesca Woodman and David Lynch. The result is a quirky and surreal sitcom style TV set that

the characters inhabit as they prune and grow. I feel as though this setting, combined with the theatrical nature of the piece will really enable audiences to enter my world and go on a journey with the dancers characters, finding images or stories that they can really relate to.”
